Learning with books (tips for teaching autistic learners)

Learning with books! We have a big selection of books that we use with the kids in my learning house, Le Chemin ABA. We love to read with the kids and often build programs around the children’s favorite books to encourage them to participate and to increase their motivation to learn with us! We work on a variety of skills with our books – including, but not limited to, imitation, vocabulary building, word fill-ins, art projects and social skills.

Recently, I gave you tips to organize your books. Today I want to share some of my favorite books from one of my  autism classrooms with you. I am also including an art project based on each book that you can complete with your child to bring the book to life and have a lot of fun!

Learning with books : teach imitation skills

This wonderful classic Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? is fabulous for working on imitation – “MOO”! You can also work on animal sounds and beginning reading and writing skills with this book.

Making Learning Fun

After you’ve enjoyed all of the Dr. Seuss reading silliness, work on imitation and beginning reading and writing skills with this fun worksheet.

Learning with books : sensory play with play dough

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus has become a classic and is well-loved all over the world. I hadn’t heard of Mo Willems until a wonderful mom of one of my past kiddos shared his books with me! I will forever be grateful to her for sharing such a fabulous author with me.

Learning with books : teach colors, new vocabulary & word fill-ins

Everybody loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book is creative and increases imagination. You can also work on colors, new vocabulary and word fill-ins with this darling book.
