This Spring chicks sensory box for kids is one of my favorite sensory boxes for autism. This activity helps autistic children concentrate, calm down and recharge. It’s also a really fun activity to share with your child! It only requires a handful of simple materials and a few minutes to set up and is sure to provide hours of autism learning fun!
Materials needs to make your Spring Sensory box

- A box like this one (or a shoe box would work too!)
- Mini Easter chicks
- Clothespins or these kid friendly plastic tweezers
- Dried chickpeas
I love using sensory boxes with my autistic learners because there are so many benefits of sensory play for children with autism. Sensory play helps individuals with autism calm down, can help keep difficult behaviors in check and can create a happier day for little ones on the spectrum overall.
How to create your Spring Sensory Box
Creating the box is very simple and involves just 2 quick and easy steps!
Step 1
- Pour the dried chickpeas into the box of your choice.
Step 2
- Add the little chicks and tweezers/clothespins.
It’s as simple as that!
How to use this Spring sensory box with your child with autism :
- Your child can put his or her hands in the dried chickpeas and touch the chicks.
- Your child can use the tweezers to pick the chicks out of the sensory box.
To get the most from this sensory activity with your child with autism, use these learning prompts :
- “Feed the chicks!”
- “Count the chicks!”
- “How many worms are there?”
