While looking for pins for my Montessori activities Pinterest board, I came across a fabulous Montessori inspired DIY activity : scent jars. This fabulous idea was pinned by the awesome mama behind the Mama’s Happy Hive blog.
Montessori programs encourage discovery of different scents at an early age to increase environmental exploration and to help children develop their memories. Research shows that scent and memory are closely linked.
Within a Montessori program, children are encouraged to use all five scents to explore and discover their environments : sight, sound, taste, smell and touch.
In her post, the mama at Mama’s Happy Hive explains how she made 3 different scent jars for her little guy, whom she affectionately calls “Little Bee”. Her chosen scents were : lavender, basil and lemon, using fresh basil and lemon and dried lavender, along with a drop of a pure essential oil (suggested organic essential oils : organic lavender essential oil, organic basil essential oil and organic lemon essential oil) in each bottle.
What a fantastic idea! ♥
This got me thinking… what other types of scent bottles could we create for the kids at Le Chemin ABA combining dry or fresh materials and quality, organic eseential oils?
I came up with a little list of Montessori inspired scent jar ideas!
1.Pine cones + organic pine essential oil.
2.Sprigs of fresh mint + organic peppermint essential oil.
4.Camomile tea bags + organic camomile essential oil .
5.Rose petals (dried or fresh) + organic rose essential oil.
