How can you teach your child with autism colors in a fun and simple way? With this ice cream playdough mat!
I made this free printable playdough mat for you to use with your child at home or in your autism classroom.
I love playdough mats because they are simple to print out, laminate and have one hand to teach a variety of skills. I always make a large variety of them to use with my little learners at my autism center in Paris.
To prepare the ice cream playdough mat :
Step 1 : download your free printable.
Step 2 : print it out.
Step 3 : laminate it. (I use a laminator and plastic laminating sheets set similar to these to make all of my playdough mats.)
Step 4 : start teaching your child colors

How to teach your child colors using the ice cream playdough mat :
Activity 1 :
Ask your child to label each color by asking “what color is it?” and pointing to each cone and to place the playdough in the correct spot according to the color of the scoop of ice cream.
This activity builds labeling and matching skills.
Activity 2 :
Ask your child to show you each color when you ask “show me pink”, etc.
This activity builds receptive language skills.
Activity 3 :
If your child can make short sentences and/or is conversational, ask your child what his or her favorite ice cream flavor is. Don’t forget to share yours too!
